iRead4Skills Inspires New Fundamental Vocabulary by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences
The European project iRead4Skills – Intelligent Reading Improvement System for Fundamental and Transversal Skills Development has contributed to the development of the new Fundamental Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language, a digital resource launched by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences through the Institute of Lexicology and Lexicography of the Portuguese Language (ILLLP).
The tool is based on the lexicons organized by levels of complexity developed within the iRead4Skills project, which structure word meanings across three progressive levels — Very Easy, Easy, and Plain — promoting a more accessible, functional, and inclusive approach to reading and communication.
Comprising 2,522 essential words, the Fundamental Vocabulary is designed for native speakers and provides detailed semantic annotation, stress marking, and phonetic transcription in European Portuguese. Users can explore complexity levels interactively through icons associated with each meaning.
This development represents a concrete application of the iRead4Skills objectives, strengthening the connection between scientific research, educational innovation, and the modernization of digital literacy resources for the Portuguese language.
