AI and Basic Skills in the Digital Era: INESC-ID’s Jorge Baptista in Discussion at EPALE Event
On 18 September 2025, EPALE hosted an online discussion on “AI and Basic Skills in the Digital Era”, exploring how artificial intelligence is transforming adult learning in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. The event, running from 10:00 to 16:00 CEST, brought together experts, practitioners, and EPALE community members to share insights, experiences, and innovative approaches.
Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping education, offering new tools to support learners, but questions remain about its practical impact and potential challenges. This discussion coincided with International Literacy Day 2025, under the theme “Promoting literacy in the digital era.”
A highlight of the event was Jorge Baptista, INESC-ID team leader and active member of the iRead4Skills project, who shared his expertise in computational and theoretical linguistics. Jorge presented innovative AI-based approaches for literacy and numeracy training, illustrating how AI can enhance learner motivation, inclusivity, and outcomes. His contribution showcased the leadership of INESC-ID in applying AI to support adult basic skills learning.
