AI and Basic Skills in the Digital Era: INESC-ID’s Jorge Baptista in Discussion at EPALE Event

On 18 September 2025, EPALE hosted an online discussion on “AI and Basic Skills in the Digital Era”, exploring how artificial intelligence is transforming adult learning in literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. The event, running from 10:00 to 16:00 CEST, brought together experts, practitioners, and EPALE community members to share insights, experiences, and innovative approaches.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly reshaping education, offering new tools to support learners, but questions remain about its practical impact and potential challenges. This discussion coincided with International Literacy Day 2025, under the theme “Promoting literacy in the digital era.”

A highlight of the event was Jorge Baptista, INESC-ID team leader and active member of the iRead4Skills project, who shared his expertise in computational and theoretical linguistics. Jorge presented innovative AI-based approaches for literacy and numeracy training, illustrating how AI can enhance learner motivation, inclusivity, and outcomes. His contribution showcased the leadership of INESC-ID in applying AI to support adult basic skills learning.

The event also invited EPALE community members to share their experiences with AI-enhanced learning programs, exchanging practical lessons and success stories. This event highlighted the crucial role of collaborative innovation, with Jorge Baptista and the iRead4Skills team at INESC-ID at the forefront of integrating AI into adult learning.

INESC-ID Team of iRead4Skills Earns Best Paper Award at PROPOR 2024

We are delighted to announce that our INESC-ID team members of iRead4Skills, Eugénio Ribeiro, Nuno Mamede, and Jorge Baptista, have been honored with the Best Paper Award at the 16th International Conference on Computational Processing of Portuguese (PROPOR 2024). This prestigious event occurred in Santiago de Compostela, Galiza, on March 12th, 2024, and is renowned as the leading conference focused on Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing for the Portuguese language.

The award-winning paper, “Automatic Text Readability Assessment in European Portuguese,” by Eugénio Ribeiro, Nuno Mamede, and Jorge Baptista is accessible in full here.
